You’ve just made a big investment in a beautiful paved patio or driveway. The question now is whether to seal it to keep those colors vibrant and protect it from wear and tear, or not. There are a number of factors that will help you decide if paver sealer should be applied.
Sealing is designed to protect pavers from sun and rain, although most are already UV-resistant. Sealing forms an invisible layer on top of the surface that repels oil, water and anything else that drops on it (as long as you wash it off as soon as you notice it). Paver sealer also helps to preserve beauty and color for years to come. The best way to tell if a surface is sealed is to inspect it – if water beads up on the top, then it has been sealed.
Paver sealer is available in a ‘super wet’ glossy finish that really brings out the coloring, but it is also available in a more natural, lustrous finish, which offers protection against the elements, as well. The preference is personal, so before deciding which is best for you, look at photographs and samples of both options. Generally speaking, dark colors have a more noticeable shine than lighter ones.
